CGO Ecology has just been instructed by IKM Consulting Ltd to perform a reptile survey on the 50km route of the former Waverley Line railway from Edinburgh to Tweedbank. This major project, led by BAM Nuttall Ltd working for Railtrack, will see the long-awaited re-opening of this iconic route. Served by Edinburgh Waverley station, and eventually running to Carlisle, the Waverley Line was closed in the Beeching Axe of the late 1960s.

The majority of CGO Ecology's work is field-based, and focuses on the most active periods for wildlife: spring, summer and autumn. Winter tends to be a less busy time, taken up with report writing, general site assessments, licence returns and renewals, tenders, and sharing data with LRCs and NGOs.

Planned road upgrade works for the A338 Bournemouth Spur Road led to a huge operation in 2010 to rescue thousands of reptiles from the verges that would be temporarily destroyed. Dorset County Council employed CGO Ecology to carry out the work. The reptiles were moved to several sites that had ideal habitat, but were unoccupied or had very low densities of the target species. Ongoing monitoring efforts have already shown that the translocated (re-homed) reptiles are doing well.
